However, once you add the thesaurus features of related-term relationships and nonpreferred terms (variants/synonyms), it is no longer as easy or obvious which relationship types to create between the terms. The ANSI/NISO Z39.19 or or ISO 25964 standards provide the best-practice guidelines to answer your questions, such as whether a pair of terms should be linked by broader-term/narrower-term relationships or rather related-term relationship.

What I find beneficial about the standards is that while taxonomists need to understand the them in order to create consistently usable thesauri or taxonomies, the end-users (the people trying to find content via the thesaurus/taxonomy) do not need to know the standards. It's similar to back-of-the-book indexes. Indexers need to study the best practices and style policies for creating usable indexes, but the users of indexes (all of us), never needed to study about indexes in order to use them. Yet if the index or taxonomy is not well-designed, findability will suffer.Heather Heddenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16424216206886861070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9094731596169096992.post-89782230394365392462014-08-27T17:09:45.452-04:002014-08-27T17:09:45.452-04:00Hi Heather,

I am beginning work on a taxonomy that I think will become thesaurus-like in scope, but I have never worked with the standards you listed.

Thanks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
